Avon View 8 – Park View 1

The Avon View Avalanche began their quest for the 2021-22 Division I Nova Scotia Boys High School Hockey Championship Saturday night at the West Hants Community Sportsplex in Windsor with an 8-1 drubbing of the Park View Panthers from Bridgewater.

The Panthers came into town after defeating the Horton High Griffins 5-0 Friday evening.  Each team will play a home and home against each other and the two teams with the best record will play a best-of-three series.

In Saturday’s game, the Avalanche went to 23-2-0 on the season and had little difficulty with the Panthers.  Brayden Jodrey opened the game’s scoring on an Avalanche power-play with a soft wrist shot just in over the Park View Blue Line.  The Avalanche played two men short for 44 seconds mid-way through the first and shortly after returning to full-strength, Terran Baillie, who played an outstanding game for the Avalanche, took a beautiful pass from Evan Baxter and went in alone and put in a back-hand shot in the top right-hand corner of the Panthers’ net.  The first period ended with the Avalanche up 2-0.

Avon View began the second with 1:52 to play short-handed but shortly after the period began, Camdyn Burgess was hauled down by a Panther who went to the penalty box. Four seconds after this Brayden Hood, stationed directly in front of the Park View net, let a shot go and it was quickly 3-0 for the home team.   It became 4-0 when Brendan Verge made a dynamite pass to Jaiden Wells who had no trouble scoring and then Carter Hood went to end to end on the most exciting play of the night and let a bullet wrist shot go to make it 5-0.

Park View’s Sam Tanner finally put his club on the scoreboard as he picked up a rebound off a Ryan Jensen shot.

The Avalanche did not slow down despite allowing their first goal of the game as Brody Richard made it 6-1 with a crisp shot directly in front of the Panther netminder. As if Carter Hood’s goal was the play of the game, Austin Hood came awfully close as he went end to end and, as he was being hauled down, dumped the puck into the Park View net for a 7-1 Avalanche lead.  With the Avalanche on the power-play and players all over the Panther net, Owen Chaisson picked up a loose puck and closed the game’s scoring to make the final 8-1.

NKEC 4 – Middleton 1

A packed house Saturday night saw a very fast-paced and exciting game with the MRHS Monarchs hosting the NKEC Titans.

Scoring opened early in the 1st with an unassisted goal by the Titans’ Evan Durling. The Monarchs’ Aidan Gallant responded with a laser from the point, assisted by Captain Carson Hayes, to tie it up 1-1. The score didn't change for the rest of the first period.

Play continued hard and fast for the first 15 minutes of the second until Mac Sinclair bounced one in for NKEC. Then with 11 seconds left Jasper Fitch lit the lamp on the power play.

The third period had Mac Sinclair with the lone goal, to wrap up the scoring for a 4-1 victory for the Mighty NKEC Titans.

Great game. Both goaltenders were incredible.

Clare 7 – Barrington 4

The Barrington Barons traveled to the Universite Sainte-Anne arena on Saturday evening to play les Clare Loups. Clare took a 1-0 lead in the opening frame as Ryan Trimper scored at the 9:17 mark. The second period saw both teams add 2 goals to their tally. Owen Penny & Jack Atkinson scored for the Barons, while Nema Hanna & Logan Comeau replied for Les Loups. The game was a 3-3 tie after 40 minutes of play.

Par-en-Bas 4 – Yarmouth 3

On Sunday, Feb. 27, the YCMHS Vikings and PEB Sharks squared off for the battle of the Fish Tank. Games between Yarmouth and PEB have been close all season and this game was no exception.

After a scoreless first period, Blake Newell scored early in the second to give the Sharks the lead. Yarmouth took the only penalty of the game in the second and Alyre Richardson scored on the man advantage to put PEB ahead 2-0. Yarmouth, never giving up, scored 20 seconds after Richardson’s goal to make it 2-1 on a goal by Gannon Dufy.

The third period saw each team score a pair of goals. As soon as PEB would score Yarmouth would answer back with one of their own.  With Par-en-Bas leading 4-2, Yarmouth’s last goal was scored with 11.9 seconds left in the game, but the Vikings could not seal the deal, even with pulling their goaltender.

The Sharks took the 4-3 win.

A great game with only one minor penalty in the 60 minutes.

Central Kings 6 – Forest Heights 1

Central Kings opened the scoring at 17:50 in the first period on the power play with Aiden Meister winning the draw. Luke Mattinson saved Cody Hebb’s initial shot, with Hebb following up on the rebound to bury the puck short side to make the score 1-0 CK.  Dylan Rafuse had some great speed through the neutral zone and a great scoring chance, with a save by Locke Albrecht. Next, the rebound was chipped out of the zone by Cody Hebb with Sam Rogers picking up the loose puck, finishing on a breakaway, putting CK up 2-0.

After some strong work on the side wall from Nathan Langille, Ryan Turner slipped a pass to Aiden Meister in the slot who scored to make it 3-0 CK.  Later in the first period, Rafuse and Perry of F.H., with several excellent scoring chances, were just not able to solve Locke Albrecht. Several minutes later, Dylan Rafuse then picked up a loose puck, rushed in on a breakaway and finished top shelf on CK to make the score 3-1 at 4:14 in the first period.

CK had a fortunate bounce to start the second period – Ryan Turner’s shot (from Rogers and Schurman) with a rebound off the FH player into the back of the net gave CK the 4-1 lead.  Cody Hebb scored again at 9:38 in the second period with a low shot from just outside the blue paint.  Scoring was rounded out by Sam Rogers at 6:09 of the third period.

Several stand out players for Forest Heights included Dylan Rafuse, Mackenzie Connors, Cohen Perry, and of course Luke Mattinson with an excellent performance in goal.  Strong performances from CK included Sam Rogers, Cody Hebb, and Aiden Meister.

Welcome back hockey: Feb. 19-20 weekend

Happy hockey everyone. Now that we're back on the ice, a reminder to teams to send in your game recaps moving forward as we were doing in the first part of the season before the stoppage in play.  It's the home team that sends in the recaps.

The first weekend of a return to hockey didn't got off without a hitch, unfortunately, due to the weather which saw Friday night games called off. But teams still did get to meet up on the ice over the weekend for the first time since December when games were last played. Many exhibition games took place over the weekend.

A reminder game recaps are posted when they have been submitted by the home team, and also based on the availability of the webmaster.

GAME RECAPS:

SATURDAY, FEB. 19

Park View 5 – West Kings 2

Saturday, Feb. 19 saw a return to game action as the Park View Panthers faced off against the West Kings Wolverines at the LCLC in Bridgewater.

The Wolverines struck first on the power play as Ryan Rector picked up a pass from Hunter Lalonde, sliding the puck under the pad of Charlie Whitty. The Panthers pressed for the equalizer, however strong goaltending kept them off the board until late in the first when Ethan Corkum knocked in a pass from Mitch MacIntosh.

The pace intensified as the game went on with both team trading chances. The panthers took the lead seven minutes into the second on a goal by Mitch MacIntosh, assist going to Ethan Corkum. The play continued to go back and forth in the second with both goaltenders making timely saves until Fischer Genge on a pass from Jack Barry increased the Panther lead to two. Late Panther penalties, however, gave the Wolverines some life as they brought it to within one on a goal by Kealan Buckley.

The Panthers picked up third period goals off the sticks of Nathan Lambourne and Dylan Demone with assists going to Sam Tanner, Fischer Genge and Goaltender Charlie Whitty to walk way away with the 5-2 victory. Overall it was a very entertaining game!

SUNDAY, FEB. 20

Par-en-Bas 7 – Barrington 3

On Sunday, the Barrington Barons traveled to the Mariners Centre to face off against the École Secondaire de Par-en-Bas Sharks. This was both teams’ second exhibition game of the weekend. The Sharks started the scoring with goals from Spencer Surette and Riley Hubbard. The Barons battled back and scored one of their own with 1:10 left in the period with a goal by Noel Cameron. The Sharks wanted the last word in the first and Surette notched his second of the game with 31 seconds left.

In the second, the Barons scored first with a goal by Lucas Nickerson to bring the score to 3-2. The Sharks answered back with goals by Krew Goodwin and Riley Hubbard. Jacob Mathews scored for the Barons with 6:27 left in the second but again Surette wanted the last say and notched his 3rd of the game at the end of the 2nd.

The third period saw back and forth action, but the sharks scored the only goal of the period. Alyre Richardson beat the Barons goaltender Jacob Atwood to make the final 7-3 Sharks.

Saturday, Dec. 4

West Kings 5 – Park View 3

In a Saturday night tilt at the LCLC in Bridgewater, the West Kings Wolverines faced off against the PVEC Panthers. The game itself had a relatively tentative start as teams tried to establish a presence on the ice by moving the puck, looking to create scoring chances.

The Wolverines were first on the board as Kendall McDow found the back of the net with the assist going Cayden Peters. The Panthers were quick to reply as on the same shift, as Chase Crouse fired a shot from the point that was tipped by Nathan Lambourne. Aiden Estey made a nice save on the play, leaving a rebound that was buried by Sam Tanner. Tied at one after one, it was the West Kings stealing the second, with goals coming off the sticks of Evan Beresford, Shaun Campbell, and Keelan Buckler, giving them all the momentum and a three-goal lead heading into the third.

The Wolverines came out hard and struck again within the first minute, as Cayden Peters hooked up with Hunter Lalonde. The Panthers staged a late game rally with goals coming off the sticks of Carlos White and Sam Tanner, however they were unable to come all the way back and the Wolverines held on for the 5-3 win and a big two points on the road.

Digby 5 – Middleton 3

The Middleton Monarchs hosted the Digby Mariners for their first match-up of the year. In an exciting first period, Digby managed to take the lead with a short-handed goal unassisted by Kaiden Longmire at 6:09. This would be the only goal in the first period.

The Mariners used the momentum to net four unanswered goals in the second. Colby Haight from Longmire. Brett Hall from Longmire. Then with 59 seconds left Avery Gunn from Cameron Titus on a powerplay, making it 4-0 for the Mariners. As the seconds wound down Longmire decided to add another point and banged one home from Austin Walker with just 1 second left on the clock.

The Monarchs came back in the third with fire. Aidan Gallant, playing D for a missing teammate, opened the scoring for the Monarchs, assisted by Logan Duncan. Shortly afterwards Haden denHaan lit the lamp again, assisted by Connor Armstrong. With time winding down Haden denHaan tallied his second point of the night with assists from Madex denHaan and Aidan Gallant.

Try as they might the Monarchs could not score again and lost the game 5-3.

Both Keaton Long and Eric Dickie were fantastic between the pipes.

Avon View 2 – Park View 0

Avon View Avalanche Head Coach Mark Tye replied after Saturday evening’s 2-0 win over the Park View Panthers in Valley Boys League Play in Windsor, “That it took us a while but we got better as the game progressed,” while describing the goaltending by the Avalanche’s Jaden Croft and Park View’s Owen Lockwood as “stellar.”

With the win the Avalanche improved their regular season record to 6-0-0 having scored 50 goals while allowing only 3.  For Park View, it marked their 2nd loss of the season and puts them at 7-2-0.

In Saturday’s game Terran Baillie missed early on a backhander close to the Panthers net. The Avalanche who outshot the Panthers 17-2 in the opening frame had a couple of other excellent scoring opportunities. Gavin Sheehy split the Panther defense on a beautiful play but his shot went inches over the right cross-bar. The Avalanche’s other exceptional scoring opportunity occurred when Camden Burgess passed over to Terran Baillie only to see Lockwood stop Baillie stone cold with a pad save.  The Panthers started the second period short-handed as Nathan Lambourne was handed a cross-checking penalty with 43 seconds to play in the first.

Carter Hood of the Avalanche, with only 3 seconds remaining in Lambourne’s penalty early in the second, took a pass from Camden Burgess and Brayden Hood in just over the Panthers blue-line and let a shot rip to put Avon View ahead 1-0.

Park View played a far better second period outshooting the Avalanche 16-10, but it was Croft in the Avon View nets who played a version of “miracle on ice” goaltending-wise who was on his stomach on the ice with his goaltending stick laying 5-10 feet away while Park View did everything humanly possible to push the puck into the net with the puck laying in the crease three separate times but it somehow stayed out.  Park View kept applying pressure as the Avalanche played two men short for 31 seconds but Croft stood on his head.  Then Lambourne with an Avalanche player returning to the ice from a penalty,  let a hard wrist shot go and Croft made a great glove save.  Lambourne seconds later went in on a breakaway for the Panthers but somehow shot it over the net.  Croft was brilliant again in the final 5 minutes of the second period as the Avalanche killed off another penalty.

To begin the third period, Baillie hit the crossbar for the Avalanche.  Zack McPhee was robbed blind by Lockwood directly in front of the Panther net and then Brody Richard had another great chance but was robbed again by Stockwell.  The Avalanche finally got their desperately needed second goal as Brayden Jodrey with exceptional hard work around the Panther net finally scored from the side of Lockwood as he was making every attempt with the puck to get in front of the net when he shot it with 9:13 to play in regulation.

The game finished with some needless penalties from both sides and actually had the Avalanche playing 3 versus 6 for Parkview in the final 1:21 as Lockwood went to the bench.  The Avalanche however, despite the flurry of foolish penalties minutes before, kept their cool and essentially controlled the play in the final 1:21 to win the game 2-0.

The Avalanche will now await the Clare Loups for a contest Saturday Dec 4 at 7 p.m. before hitting the road Sunday Dec 5 for a contest in Digby.

Middleton 5 – Barrington 3

The Barrington Barons braved the snowy roads to visit the Middleton Monarchs for a very exciting Saturday night game.

The Monarchs’ Michael Hoogerwerf opened the scoring early in the first, only to be answered 30 seconds later by the Barons Owen Penney.

Both teams showed up to play and play they did! A hard battle ensued for the rest of the first period, ending with a 1-1 tie.

Not quite five minutes into the second, the Barons’ Owen Penney struck again but the Monarchs rallied back with 2 shorthanded goals by Michael Hoogerwerf and Riley Noble to bring the Monarchs in the lead. Haden DenHaan scored a late goal with 28 seconds to end the second period 4-2 for the Monarchs.

The Barons came out with fire in the third, determined to even the score and managed to net a beautiful powerplay goal with just 5 minutes left. Michael Hoogerwerf ended all hope with just 2 and a half minutes remaining, adding a hat trick to his night.

Final score 5-3 Monarchs.  A great game to watch with both teams giving it all.

Horton 6 – Forest Heights 2

On Saturday night the Forest Heights Falcons travelled to Kentville to try to beat the Horton Griffins for a second time this year.

The Falcons started off strong with many chances that Mason Veinotte had to be sharp on. The first period ended 0-0.

In the second period, Cayden Andersen started the scoring for the Griffins with a beautiful shot top-shelf and the Griffins would score two more unanswered goals in the second period for a 3-0 lead going into the third period.

The Falcons were determined to not go away in this game and scored 5 minutes and 30 seconds into the third period. The goal was scored by Madden Myrah and assisted by Dylan Rafuse and Matt Hill.

The Griffins responded with two goals of their own to make it 5-1 (goal scorers were Cohen Sawler and Jesse Bidgood).

The Falcons looked like they were going to try to mount a comeback with a goal from Matt Hill with 3:59 mark but all hopes were dashed when Hugo Sorbetti scored 12 seconds later to make it 6-2 which was the final score.

Game scoring recap:

Horton Griffins:

Cayden Andersen: 1 goal and 1 assist

Mac Harnum: 1 goal and 1 assist

Cohen Sawler: 1 goal and 1 assist

Hugo Sorbetti: 1 goal and 1 assist

Colin Tracey: 1 assist

Par-en-Bas 5 – Yarmouth 4 (Shootout)

On Sunday the fans of the Yarmouth Vikings and École Secondaire de Par-en-Bas Sharks were treated to an exciting game of hockey. This was the second meeting of the weekend. The Sharks beat the Vikings Friday night 5-3 in a retro jersey game.

In the first period, the teams exchanged chances, and each had powerplay opportunities that ended without scoring.

The second period was a different story. The Sharks’ Lucas Cottreau scored his first goal of the season with a rebound goal off a Riley Hubbard shot. The Sharks scored 4 minutes later with another rebound goal by Caleb d’Entremont. Just when Par-en-Bas thought they had the Vikings, their deadly powerplay got to work. Landon Watkins-Bonnar scored 2 goals 20 seconds apart to tie the game up for the Vikings, one of the two coming on the poweplay. The lethal Yarmouth powerplay scored another goal by Luke MacLeay 2 minutes later to give the Vikings their first lead of the game.  The period ended 3-2 in Yarmouth’s favour.

Going into the 3rd period, the Vikings played a smart puck possession game to not allow Par-en-Bas to have time enough to tie the game. PEB’s first line of Blake Newell, Chandler LeBlanc and Spencer Surette decided it was time to make a difference being a minus 2 on the night already Blake Newell tied the game at 10:44 of the 3rd. Yarmouth, not impressed by Par-en-Bas’s goal, scored with 3:09 left in the game after having the Sharks hemmed into their zone for 2 minutes, putting the Vikings ahead 4-3. Par-en-Bas, not forgetting the 2 losses the Vikings handed to them last season, wanted desperately to tie the game. With the Sharks’ net empty, Spencer Surette scored with 39 seconds left on the clock.

Overtime saw each team exchange chances but this game had to be decided by a shootout. Cameron Brown shot first for the Vikings and scored. The Sharks’ shooter Chandler LeBlanc was stopped by goaltender Brady Saulnier. The next 2 shooters for Yarmouth missed, which meant Par-en-Bas’s Spencer Surette had to score to keep the game going and that’s exactly what he did. In the sixth round of the shootout, Yarmouth’s Tyler MacLeod missed which meant the Shark’s Noal Saulnier had the game on his stick. Saulnier beat Saulnier with a quick wrist shot low glove side to seal the win for the Sharks.

The fans of these two teams were treated to an amazing afternoon of hockey.

Scoring for Yarmouth Landon Watkins-Bonnar (2), Luke MacLeay and Daniel Kenney with 1 each.

Scoring for PEB Lucas Cottreau, Caleb d’Entremont, Blake Newell, Spencer Surette and Nolan Saulnier (shootout winner)
