Dec. 18

CENTRAL KINGS 7 – NKEC 2

This was the first matchup of the year between these two local rivals. NKEC was off to a strong start, scoring the first goal of the game at 18:46 of the first period with strong cycle play and a shot from the point from Petrie (Braun, Durling assists).  CK got on the board at the 4:54 mark with Meister picking up a pass off the wall and shooting from the high slot to even the score at one (Meister, from Langille, Balsor).  CK scored again at 2:37 mark with Hebb scoring on a nice deke (Hebb, from Meister, Langille).  CK rounded out the first period scoring at the 1:23 mark with Boates scoring with a point shot (Boates, from Meister, Nauss).  End of period one, CK 3 – NKEC 1.

The second period scoring got underway at the 14:03 mark with Meister scoring again with a shot in the high slot, (Meister, from Hebb). CK found the back of the net on the power play with a shot from the point, off the back boards on to the stick of Meister for this third of the game (Meister, from Boates, Hebb).

The third period scoring started with NKEC back on the score sheet with some nice work moving the puck to the outside and finding Harris in the slot (Harris, from Petrie, Fletcher).  CK responded with a tap in from Turner (from Nauss, Langille) and Meister again (from Williams, Hebb).

Final Score: CK 7 – NKEC 2

TIMBER CUP TOURNAMENT: Dec. 16-18

For the first time in Timber Cup history, the two local host teams – the Par-en-Bas Sharks and the Yarmouth Vikings – made up the Dec. 18 championship final of this annual high school hockey event held at the Mariners Centre.

First known as the Cook’s Cup but rebranded years ago as the Timber Cup after title sponsor Pleasant Timber Mart became involved, it was the PEB Sharks who hoisted the cup in victory after a 3-2 win over Yarmouth.

It was a tight game between the two local rival schools, tied at 1-1 after two periods. The Sharks went ahead 3-1 in the final frame as PEB’s Blake Newell completed the hat-trick.

Yarmouth did add to the intensity of the game, scoring with 41.3 seconds left to make it 3-2. But even with the extra Vikings attacker after Yarmouth had pulled its goalie, PEB held onto the lead and took the win – their first-ever championship of this tournament.

Newell was named player of the game for the Sharks and Yarmouth’s goalie Braeden Hipson was player of the game for his squad.

The Sharks had advanced to the championship after defeating Avon View 4-0 in the first semi-final of the morning.

The other semi-final between Yarmouth and Bay View (formerly Sir John A) kept people on the edge of their seats. Bay View, the defending Timber Cup champions, has won this tournament numerous times and had finished the round robin in first place, scoring 20 goals against their opponents while only giving up one.

Yarmouth opened the scoring and led 1-0 after the first period. Bay View scored in the second. The game was tied 1-1 going into the third and remained tied at the end of regulation. The game moved into a three-on-three sudden-death five-minute overtime in which Bay View nearly scored with a loose puck after hitting the post twice on the same play. However, stellar goaltending from Yarmouth’s Braeden Hipson, with help from teammate Luke MacLeay, kept the puck out of the net. Hipson would go on to make another huge OT save before his teammate Landon Watkins-Bonnar buried the puck in the Bay View net for the win, setting the stage for the first-ever two local-host-teams final.

The Timber Cup saw eight teams taking part. Rounding out the competition were Clare, Digby, West Kings and Eastern Shore.

Dec. 22

PEB 9 – BARRINGTON 3

The Barrington Barons traveled to the Mariners Centre to battle the Par-en-Bas Sharks. Both teams had players missing due to the lobster season being in full swing.

The Sharks came out strong, looking to build off their Timber Cup win. The Sharks kept the pressure in the Barons end, but Barrington’s netminder kept the puck out.

Alyre Richardson finally beat Atwood at 12:32 in the first. Blake Newell would score his first goal with a 1:21 left in the first.

The Sharks ran away with the game in the 2^nd scoring 6 goals (Richardson (2), Jacquard, C. d’Entremont, N. Cottreau, L. Cottreau and Newell (2)) to Barrington’s Dylan Hatfield’s goal. The Barons work ethic and never give up attitude saw them win the 3^rd period with goals by Jack Atkinson and Garrin Goreham.

Sharks’ Newell scored his 3^rd for the Sharks and for his 2nd hat-trick in a week.

Dec. 23

PEB 5 – YARMOUTH 1

On Christmas Eve’s eve, the Yarmouth Vikings squared off against the Par-en-Bas Sharks. Both teams were looking to bring the same intensity as the Timber Cup championship game they recently played in. The strong winds and weather allowed for both teams to ice close to their full rosters and allowed for great attendance since there was no lobster fishing happening.

The Vikings, looking for revenge, scored first with a perfectly placed shot by Orren Hatfield. The Sharks would answer back with goals from Alyre Richardson and Blake Newell.

The second period saw a lot of back-and-forth action with both teams exchanging powerplay opportunities. The Sharks would get the period’s lone goal with a great individual effort by Caleb d’Entremont.

Par-en-Bas put the game away in the third period with goals by Carson d’Eon and Riley Hubbard. It was a clean, hard-fought game by both teams with 5 minor penalties between the two.

Final score PEB 5- Yarmouth 1.
