Avon View 5- Yarmouth-2
Two Valley High School League’s Boys teams with fairly equal records clashed in Windsor at the West Hants Community Sportsplex on Feb. 11, before another nearly sold-out crowd with the 11-5-0 Avon View Avalanche getting by the 10-4-2 Yarmouth Vikings 5-2.
The Vikings showed they had some depth to contend with Avon View, but had an off night trying to connect with their passing and applying any sustained pressure on Kenneth Fisher in the Avon View nets.
The Avalanche’s Ryan Cooke opened the game’s scoring with a well-placed wrist shot over the shoulder of Vikings net minder Braeden Hipson. Just 1:36 later, the Avalanche’s Jaiden Wells picked up a rebound directly in front of Hipson and shoved it home. Nathan Dill came close to making it 3-0 with a close in shot but he failed to connect. Then with 7:12 to go Wilson Davison let a slap shot go from 15 feet out and Avon View had a 3-0 lead after twenty minutes. Avon View outshot the Vikings 13-5 in the opening frame.
The Vikings seemed to find their mo-jo for a short time at the beginning of the second, as during a mad scramble in front of the Avalanche net Landon Watkins of the Vikings shoved the puck past Fisher to make it 3-1 Avon View. The Vikings’ Luke MacLeay then had a close in shot, but Fisher made a pad save to keep the game at 3-1 Avon View. Lawson Spencer and Wilson Davison came right back in close but could not beat Hipson. Yarmouth was forced to play the final 1:05 of the second period 2 men short and AV outshot Yarmouth 11-7.
The third period began with Avon View still having a 36-second, 2-man advantage and Davison, with only 10 seconds remaining in the initial Yarmouth penalty, whipped a shot from the face-off circle to put Avon View up 4-1. The Vikings applied a little pressure early in the third as Daniel Kenney and Declan Fitzgerald went in 2-on-1, but Kenney decided to keep the puck and took a shot to Fisher’s left side which he stopped. Midway through the final period, Daniel Kenney of the Vikings let a wrist shot go from just inside the left-off face-off circle to pull the Vikings to within a pair. Owen Fitgerald then went in alone for the Vikings but ended up not getting a good shot away. Declan Fitgerald then did some fancy stick work through the Avon View defence and went in alone with a clear shot, only to have Fisher turn it away with his glove. With the score 4-2 and only 3:39 to play, the Avalanche were sent to the penalty box but 1:36 into the penalty Wilson Davison connected for his third goal of the evening as he picked up the puck after Yarmouth started out with it near their blue line. Davison stole it and went in alone and took a high shot to defeat Hispson and give the Avalanche a 3-goal lead which is the way it stayed. The Avalanche outshot the Vikings 10-7 in the third for a game total of 34-19 in favour of the Avalanche.
The game might have been Avon View’s final home game of the season as they complete their Valley Regular season schedule the next weekend with a pair of games. The following weekend they are in Bridgewater for the Western Zone Division 1 Regionals to play Horton, Park View and Yarmouth in a round-robin tournament. The winner of this tournament advances directly to the provincials, but if Avon View should finish second, they would come back to Windsor at the Sports Complex for a 1-game sudden-death affair with a yet to be named Metro High School Team for the right to advance to the provincials.
PEB 12 – MIDDLETON 0
On Saturday, Feb. 11, the Middleton Monarch’s traveled to the Mariners Centre to face off against the École Secondaire de Par-en-Bas Sharks.
This was the second match between the two teams. The Sharks won their first meeting in Middleton. Par-en-Bas celebrated their four graduating players before the game with a small ceremony.
The first period saw the teams exchange chances. The goaltenders for each side needed to be ready early in this game. Dominic Jacquard started the scoring for the Sharks. Goaltender Miguel Surette needed to make two in-tight saves to keep the game 1-0 early in the first. Lucas Cottreau, Blake Newell and Seamus d’Entremont would net each a goal to make the score 4-0 PEB after 1.
Lucas Cottreau notched 2 goals in the second to record his first high school hat-trick. Connor Pothier and Riley Hubbard each scored to put the Sharks ahead 8-0 after 2. Veteran goaltender Miguel Surette asked to put rookie Grade 8 goaltender Zander White halfway through the second in a great display of leadership. Zander was tested with breakaways and great opportunities, but kept the puck out.
The third saw more offence from the Sharks with Alyre Richardson, Dominic Jacquard, Ben Lyons and Nolan Cottreau getting goals.
Hats off to the Monarchs who never let up until the final buzzer.
Final Score PEB 12 - Middleton 0.
